JAMES ROBINSON

Opera Theatre of St. Louis - Artistic Director 

JAMES ROBINSON has been the Artistic Director of Opera Theatre of St. Louis (USA) since 2009.  He has directed a wide range of new productions for the company including many world premieres including Terence Blanchard’s FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES and CHAMPION, Ricky Ian Gordon’s 27 and Jack Perla’s SHALIMAR THE CLOWN, and revivals of notable modern works such as Marc Blitzstein’s REGINA, John Adams’s THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER and Tobias Picker’s EMMELINE.

 

His production of PORGY AND BESS opened the Metropolitans’ 2019 season after premiering at the English National Opera and the Dutch National Opera.  He has directed  new productions for the Santa Fe Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, the Washington Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Dallas Opera, the Wexford Festival, New York City Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, the Los Angeles Opera, the Royal Swedish Opera, Opera Australia and many others.  

His work has also been seen at the Hollywood Bowl, the Baltimore Symphony, Carnegie Hall and the London Symphony Orchestra.  Future projects include the world premiere of M BUTTERFLY by Huang Ruo for the Santa Fe Opera and FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES for the Metropolitan Opera.
