Lynn Baker is a vocal and opera coach, collaborative pianist and a specialist in English lyric diction, based in New York City. She is coach and casting consultant for vocal works at New York City Ballet as well as English diction coach and adjunct faculty at The New School Department of Drama and Mannes Opera.
Since 2017, she has been the English diction coach for multiple operatic productions at Opera Philadelphia and the Curtis Institute of Music. She was an assistant conductor and English diction coach at New York City Opera from 1993 until its closing in 2013. Recital performance and coaching credits also include The Philadelphia Orchestra with Maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Seattle Opera, The Kennedy Center Terrace Theater, The White House East Room (televised by PBS), The Morgan Library Gilder Lehman Hall, United Nations Dag Hammarskjöld Auditorium, Atlanta Opera, Berkshire Opera Festival, VOX: Showcasing American Opera, Carnegie Hall Weill Music Institute, Washington National Opera, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Bard Summerscapes Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra with Maestra Marin Alsop, and the Juilliard Opera Center.
Ms. Baker was Artistic Director of Crested Butte Opera Studio, Crested Butte Music Festival, from 2012 until the studio program's demise in 2018. She has also been on the young artist program staffs of Seattle Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera New Jersey, as well as coach at Juilliard Opera Center and Curtis Institute of Music.
In her English lyric diction work for the stage, Ms. Baker coaches accents and dialogue, and works in chamber and grand opera as well as legitimate musical theater. She has developed teaching documents, methods and tools with the goal of achieving consistency, clarity and textual color from operatic singers of English. She is an Associate Editor for Transcriptions at the International Dialects of English Archive (www.dialectsarchive.com). IDEA is a website resource for theater professionals, offering recordings and transcriptions of English speakers, native and non-native.
Ms. Baker is a frequent vocal recital pianist and an avid performer of new and contemporary vocal and instrumental music. She has had an 18-year collaborative partnership with soprano, Harolyn Blackwell, performing traditional and contemporary art song recitals as well as cabaret evenings.
Ms. Baker received the Master of Music in Accompanying from The Juilliard School, and was a student of Margo Garrett.
